Back in the 1930s, according to the U.S. Wall Ball Association, beach-goers hitting a bald tennis ball against the sides of wooden jetties inspired the New York Parks Department to build community handball courts in city parks. Today, the game is a professional sport known as Wall Ball and played at athletic centers across the country. Dmitry Druzhinsky, co-founder of MatchPoint NYC, a premier health and fitness complex in Brooklyn, was recently joined by politicians for the Pro Wall Ball Tournament. The annual big competition – billed as the “Battle of the Boroughs,” raises awareness of public health and youth empowerment. The winning team was awarded a trophy and a year of bragging rights.
